Stiff neck that won't ease? Pain travelling into your shoulder or arm? Tingling in your fingers by evening?

Neck pain, stiffness, restricted movement or discomfort spreading into the shoulders and arms can interfere with work, sleep and everyday activities. If you have been diagnosed with cervical spondylosis, you may be exploring ways to manage your symptoms and improve your comfort.

Dr. Prabal Frank Nandwani offers an integrative approach to cervical spondylosis care in New Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, incorporating acupuncture, acupressure, energy medicine and holistic healing practices, alongside personalised stress-management and lifestyle guidance. The approach is tailored to each individual's symptoms, needs and treatment goals.

The approach begins with an assessment of your symptoms, medical history and existing investigations to help determine which options may be appropriate. The aim is to support symptom management, comfort and everyday function. Results vary, and medical assessment remains essential when symptoms suggest nerve or spinal cord involvement.

— Condition Overview

What Is Cervical Spondylosis?

What does an MRI show, and what does it not show?

An MRI shows structure, not pain. Many people with clear changes on their scan have little or no pain, and some people with severe pain have only mild changes. So your treatment should be guided by your symptoms and examination, not by the scan alone. I will always ask you to bring your reports, and I work alongside your orthopaedic surgeon, neurologist or physician.

Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear in the neck. Over the years, the discs between the neck bones (vertebrae) lose water and height, small bony growths can form, and the joints stiffen. It is extremely common. Many people develop some of these changes by their forties or fifties, and long hours at a desk or phone add to the strain.

Why does it cause pain, tingling or arm symptoms?

  • Muscle tension: the neck and shoulder muscles tighten to protect a stiff, sore segment, which causes aching and restricted movement.

  • Irritated joints and discs: these can cause neck pain and headaches that start at the back of the head.

  • Nerve root irritation (cervical radiculopathy): when a nerve leaving the spine is squeezed or inflamed, pain, numbness or tingling can travel into the shoulder, arm or fingers.

Therapeutic Rationale

How Can Acupuncture Help Neck Pain

Traditional acupuncture provides a non-pharmacological, supportive intervention designed to assist musculoskeletal comfort alongside conventional clinical care.

Myofascial Relaxation

Local Circulation

Neural Regulation

Targeted sterile filament insertion helps ease chronic hypertonicity in taut cervical and shoulder bands, encouraging muscle fibers to release persistent resting tension.

Micro-stimulation stimulates local microvascular dilation, supporting the delivery of oxygenated blood and cellular nutrients to restricted soft tissues around the vertebrae.

Acupoint placement engages sensory nerve pathways, supporting endogenous modulating mechanisms that help soothe generalized somatic irritation and neck sensitivity.

What the research says

The research is encouraging for neck pain, and more limited when a nerve is involved.

A Cochrane systematic review of acupuncture for neck pain found that, for mechanical neck pain, acupuncture reduced pain and disability better than sham or no treatment in the short term. Cochrane review (2016)

For neck pain with arm symptoms from a pinched nerve (cervical radiculopathy), the evidence is thinner. The same Cochrane review found only two small trials of this type, too few for firm conclusions. A later meta-analysis of randomised trials reported that acupuncture reduced pain more than cervical traction in cervical spondylotic radiculopathy, but its authors note that large, high-quality trials are still few. Meta-analysis of randomised trials

So it is reasonable to expect acupuncture to ease neck pain for many people, especially over the short term. It does not reverse the wear in your spine, and results differ from person to person.

How it is thought to work

Researchers have proposed several mechanisms: acupuncture needling may influence how pain signals travel through the nervous system, may prompt the body to release its own pain-relieving chemicals, and may ease tight muscles and improve local blood flow. Relaxation and the therapeutic experience itself also play a part in how people feel. These explanations are still being studied.

The traditional view

In traditional Chinese medicine, neck pain is understood as a blockage in the flow of energy (qi) along the channels that run through the neck and shoulders. Needling specific points is meant to restore the flow. I include this because it guides how points are chosen, and many patients find the framework meaningful. It is a traditional model, not a description of the discs in your MRI.

/ Methodology

My Approach: Body, Mind and Daily Habits Together

Every session follows a systematic, cautious protocol developed over decades of integrative clinical acupuncture practice. Neck pain is rarely only about the neck. Stress makes us clench our shoulders, poor sleep lowers pain tolerance, and fear of movement keeps muscles tight. As a clinical psychologist as well as an acupuncturist, I look at all of it.

When to See a Medical Doctor First

Acupuncture is an adjunctive therapy and should never replace primary medical or neurological evaluation. Please seek immediate attention from a qualified spine specialist or orthopaedic physician if you experience any of the following warning signs:

• Sudden loss of muscle strength, hand grip power, or dropping objects unexpectedly. • Progressive numbness, sharp shooting sensations, or loss of sensation radiating down the arms or fingers. • Any loss of bladder or bowel control, or progressive difficulty maintaining walking balance. • Neck discomfort following acute physical trauma, high-impact fall, or accompanied by unexplained fever or rapid weight loss.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I continue my medicines and physiotherapy?

Yes. Acupuncture works alongside your current treatment. Please do not stop any medicine without your doctor's advice.

Can acupuncture reverse cervical spondylosis?

No. Age-related changes in the spine do not reverse. The aim is to reduce pain, ease muscle tension and help you move more comfortably, and to give you the tools to keep your neck healthier.

Do I need to bring my MRI or X-ray?

Yes, please bring all recent reports and scans. They help me understand your condition and decide whether acupuncture is suitable for you.

Does cervical acupuncture hurt?

How many sessions will I need?

Where is the clinic and how do I book?

Most clients report a brief initial sensation resembling a minor pinch, followed by a mild feeling of heaviness, warmth, or deep muscular easing around the neck.

This depends on how long you have had the problem and how severe it is. After your assessment I will advise a plan and review your progress at set points. I will tell you honestly if I think acupuncture is not helping you.
