The Start of a Repetitive Story
In 2019, a woman began visiting my home clinic frequently due to her health concerns. During our conversations, she often spoke about her paternal uncles and aunts. Her stories revolved around her father’s unfulfilled love story, which left him deeply depressed. When she was just two years old, her mother left her and her father, further compounding his distress. Struggling to cope, her father turned to drugs as an escape. She grew up under the care of her grandmother and paternal uncles. I noticed that many of our conversations followed a repetitive pattern—she would recount the same stories again and again.
The Shift to Present and Future Conversations
One day, I gently told her, “You are always welcome to visit me, but from now on, let’s focus on the present or talk about your plans for the future.” She agreed, but in subsequent sessions, she grew unusually quiet. Instead of discussing her own life, she began asking questions about my past and younger years. Although the topic of her parental uncles came up less often, her fixation on the past remained. She merely shifted her focus to exploring my experiences.
The Consequences of Dwelling on the Past
This preoccupation with the past had a significant impact on her mindset and career. Once a dynamic, high-earning professional, she had, over 15 years, transformed into a housewife absorbed in gossip. Her inability to move forward from her past prevented her from focusing on her future and impaired her decision-making abilities. She frequently procrastinated tasks that could have brought her greater happiness and fulfillment.
The Handwriting Analysis Session
One chilly winter evening, during one of our sessions, she handed me a rough piece of paper with a few sentences she had written. She requested me to analyze her handwriting.
Revealing the Past Through Handwriting
To my amazement, her handwriting revealed something extraordinary. The long, sweeping starting strokes in her writing—so rare to find—were glaringly evident. These strokes clearly indicated her deep attachment to the past and her struggles with making quick decisions. What was even more remarkable was the consistency with which these long starting strokes appeared in such a small sample of her writing.
The Power of Handwriting to Unveil the Self
Handwriting is a powerful window into one’s personality. It provides profound insights into an individual's traits and tendencies.
